Do’s and Don’ts for Diabetes

Foot & Ankle Specialists, PC Posted on November 14, 2022 by monpodNovember 28, 2022

This November we’re raising awareness for American Diabetes Month. Diabetes affects millions of Americans each year and can consequently create numerous foot problems. Nerve and blood vessel damage in your feet can lead to numbness and tingling. Without feeling in your feet, it’s easier to let ailments like blisters and ulcers slide because you aren’t aware of them. This month, and every month, we encourage everyone to practice good foot care habits. Here are some of our biggest do’s and don’ts for keeping your feet healthy!

DO Wash Your Feet Every Day

One of the simplest ways you can keep your feet healthy. Wash them every day. Use lukewarm water and mild soap. Alternatively, have a foot soak with Epsom salts to ease inflammation and reduce foot odor. Be sure to dry your feet well after, including in between your toes.

DON’T Avoid Doctors

This includes your podiatrist! Working with a team of diabetic specialists will ensure that you’re staying healthy and can catch any complications before they turn serious. A trusted podiatrist is helpful for regular checkups, and they can give you personalized foot care tips.

DO Get Regular Exercise

Get your heart racing with a daily exercise regime. Not only will it help control blood sugar levels, but it can help lessen any strain on your legs and ankles, preventing pain and discomfort. If you’re worried about foot pain, choose something low-impact, like bike riding, walking, swimming, or yoga.

DON’T Ignore Pain

Experiencing discomfort in your feet or ankles? Spot a questionable cut on your foot? Always contact your podiatrist at the first sign of concern. Waiting to get it checked out can lead to a more serious condition, which may call for surgery or even amputation.

You can count on the Foot & Ankle Specialists, PC foot doctors, to care for your feet using a full range of conservative and surgical therapies. Our expert team, including board-certified podiatrists Dr. Scott E. Hughes, Dr. Greg P. Vogt, and Dr. Christine I. Tumele, serves patients of all ages with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technologies, including on-site digital x-ray, and ultrasound, diabetic shoes, and digital scanning for custom orthotics. Please contact our office to schedule a consultation. We offer house calls Monday through Thursday.
