Four Healthy Feet Tips for Your Child
Did you know most of the foot problems adults face today started when they were kids? Because of this, children’s foot care is crucial. It is never too early to start teaching your kids how to care for their feet! Foot & Ankle Specialists, P.C., wants to help guide you and your child to long-term success with these four tips.
- Teach your child about daily foot care. Washing your feet every day, including in between your toes, and drying thoroughly is important. Encourage them to create their own routine.
- Pay attention to their shoes. Kids grow at a fast rate. That’s why it’s important to check in with your child and make sure their shoes are comfortable. During shoe shopping, ask them questions about how each pair fits. For kids who play sports, ensure they have the right footwear for their activity. This will prevent any injuries. When it comes to babies, their shoes should never feel restrictive. Babies should be able to kick and stretch their feet without their shoes holding them back.
- Never ignore their pain. Let your child know they should come to you if they experience any pain or discomfort in their legs, ankles, and feet. If you notice them limping, staying off their feet, or see any signs of injury, ask them about it. Always contact your podiatrist for assistance when it comes to pain.
- Toddlers should walk on their terms. Kids walk when they’re ready. Don’t push your child to walk if they’re not at that stage yet. Similarly, if you notice any unusual walking patterns, like walking on their tippy-toes or with their feet pointed in or out, that’s completely normal. Most kids grow out of those habits once they get more comfortable walking. If you don’t notice any changes, call your podiatrist.
