How to Prevent Painful Foot Blisters
Heat, moisture, and friction from working, playing sports, walking, hiking, and other activities can irritate the skin and cause painful blisters to develop on your feet. Wearing properly fitted and supportive shoes along with orthotic inserts can help stop blisters and aid in the prevention and treatment of many other foot and ankle problems.
You can avoid getting painful blisters on your feet with the following methods:
- Wear the right shoes. Avoid wearing tightly fitting shoes like high heels that push your toes together and cause excessive friction and blistering. Shoes that are too loose allow your feet to move around too much causing rubbing, skin irritation, and blistering.
- Locate any hot spots. Look for any red and irritated skin and locate the corresponding area inside your shoes to see if any excess material may be rubbing on your skin. Insulate and isolate hotspots with moleskin or adhesive bandages.
- Stay properly hydrated. You can help avoid blisters by drinking plenty of water. Be sure to consume healthy liquids before, during, and after hard work and exercise to maintain fluid balance and help avoid blisters.
