The Right Running Shoes for You

Foot & Ankle Specialists, PC Posted on January 12, 2016 by monpodJanuary 12, 2016

Running is a popular choice for getting and staying in shape—and for good reasons: it is inexpensive and can be done nearly anywhere, alone or with others. There is one piece of “equipment” however, that you need to invest in: a good pair of running shoes. High quality shoes that fit your feet properly are a must to prevent injury and maximize performance.

The first step to picking the right shoes is a visit to Foot and Ankle Specialists, PC. One of our board certified foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Scott E. Hughes, Dr. Greg P. Vogt, Dr. Christine I. Tumele, and Dr. Matthew W.E. Lewin, can examine your foot and your gait as well as evaluate your podiatric medical history. You can take this information to a store that specializes in running shoes and use it to choose a shoe that is the best designed for your particular foot.

Here are some other tips for choosing running shoes:

  • Bring the socks, inserts and any orthotic devices that you plan to wear and try on the shoes you are considering with those items for a more accurate fit (look for running shoes with removable soles if you use orthotics)
  • Before trying the shoes on, make sure the soles flex easily in the area where your foot flexes
  • Take your time; try on a few different models and brands before making your selection
  • Try on both shoes (often times one foot is bigger than the other) and walk or jog around the store for a few minutes
  • Make sure the shoes feel comfortable at the time that you are buying them—a breaking in period is a myth.
  • The toe box should be roomy enough to allow your toes wiggle room and there should be a half inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe
  • Make sure the middle part of the shoe holds your foot firmly when laced up so that your foot doesn’t slide forward as you run; the heel counter should also fit snugly to prevent rubbing and blisters
  • Shop for shoes at the end of the day or after a workout; your feet are at their largest then. Did you know that your feet can swell up to one full size after a strenuous workout?

Before starting a running program, make an appointment at either our Lambertville or Monroe office by calling 734-241-0200 or 734-856-8900 and get your new exercise regimen of on the right foot!
