What Can Custom Orthotics Do for You?
Orthotics refers to an insert you put inside your shoe to help alleviate pain and discomfort or correct abnormal foot function. Over-the-counter orthotics are available and can be helpful for minor conditions. Your podiatrist may prescribe custom orthotics as part of the treatment for several foot and ankle conditions. At Foot & Ankle Specialists, P.C. we utilize custom orthotics to correct for abnormal foot and lower extremity function. Orthotics can reduce or change the forces that are acting on your foot in an abnormal or negative way and so prevent future problems from occurring or current ones from getting worse. There are two main type of prescription orthotics, accommodative and functional.
Accommodative Orthotics
The primary goal of accommodative orthotics is to relieve pain and pressure from a condition that is affecting the bottom of the foot, such as calluses or a diabetic foot ulceration, by cushioning or padding the affected area. They can also be designed to aid in the control of abnormal foot function. Accommodative orthotics are usually flexible and made of softer materials than functional orthotics.
Functional Orthotics
Functional orthotics are designed to correct abnormal foot function. They are used to treat a wide variety of painful areas including, toe joints, arch and instep, ankle, and heel pain. Since proper foot function ultimately affects the whole lower half of the body, functional orthotics can also reduce pain and discomfort in the shins, knees, and hips. Functional orthotics are usually made of either a semi-rigid or rigid material, such as plastic or graphite.
In most cases, your foot and ankle surgeon will prescribe both accommodative and functional orthotics. Since custom orthotics are designed to fit your specific foot, a three-dimensional mold has to be made prior to fabricating the actual orthotics. This can be done with plaster, stepping into a box of compressible foam, or scanning the foot with a mechanical or optical scanner.
